Action 1989 "Goodwrench" North Wilkesboro Race Winner

In April 1989 at North Wilkesboro Speedway, Earnhardt was in the throes of a 15 race winless drought. But the day before the First Union 400, he broke the track’s qualifying record of 117.524 mph. Driving the #3 Goodwrench Chevrolet Monte Carlo on Goodyear’s all-new radial tires, Earnhardt was beyond fast.

On race day, he led 296 laps of 400 laps. Midway through, he traded paint a few times with Rusty Wallace. As a result, both drivers were nearly black-flagged by NASCAR for “overaggressive racing.” “They (NASCAR) always get excited if I bump somebody,” said Earnhardt after the race. “Me and Rusty weren’t giving each other a hard time. We were having a fun time.”

With 10 laps to go, Earnhardt was out front. Then Alan Kulwicki made a late charge on lap 396, trying to make a pass. Kulwicki slid high into turn two and Earnhardt sailed on, garnering his first victory of the season by 2.20 seconds.

Dale Earnhardt

Action 1956 "Main Texaco" Ford

Back in 1971, Dale Earnhardt was just getting started. He was years away from being a NASCAR Champion, and it would be many wins before he’d become known as the Intimidator. But with the prodding of Earnhardt’s father Ralph, a North Carolina car owner named James Miller saw the potential in young Earnhardt and turned his 1956 Ford Victoria over to the unproven driver. It was only the second car Earnhardt ever raced. “He was a wild kid back then,” said Miller. “He didn’t win in my car, but he never did get it tore up where we couldn’t fix it.” Now Lionel NASCAR Collectables is proud to introduce – for the very first time – the diecast of the #8 1956 Ford Victoria which Earnhardt drove on the dirt tracks of the Carolinas in the GASCAR racing series. It’s a diecast that tells the story, that begins the legend, and it has never been available to collectors until now.

It's not often that a diecast comes along that's truly historic. This one is. On May 28, 1978 at Charlotte Motor Speedway the #96 Cardinal Tractor Ford Torino became the first Ford Dale Earnhardt raced in the premier series of NASCAR. It's also the car he raced to his first top 10 finish on July 4, 1978 at Daytona's famed Firecracker 400. It's a car that has never been made in diecast form... until now. Lionel NASCAR Collectibles proudly presents the #96 Cardinal Tractor Ford Torino as part of the new NASCAR Classics line.

"This car was one of the best kept secrets...back when you could keep a secret...the guys on the crew didn't know what it was going to look like...when we got it ready to race it was in primer...the guys didn't see it 'til we unloaded it that mornin' at the track. That was the first "special"...that car made die-cast what it is today...then we kept it going...we set a trend. It was one of the coolest things to see that car on the track. This was one of the last secrets in racing!"

Dale says “Hang on, I’ll be off radio a few minutes.” And then you see the fans in the stands and he comes around the turn with his butt out the window and cleaning off the windshield…that was one of the coolest things…we did so many cool things…it’s hard to pull out just a few…it just shows…whatever it takes…we’re comin’ out to win."

"This was absolutely somethin’…if you watch the tape you see they were runnin’ one, two…. but it wasn’t like that most of the race…we were out of it ‘til it came to the end… it pays a lot to win, it don’t pay that much for second.
It shows what a thing we had…he made up his mind he was going to win…he does whatever it takes…it shows what a deal this team was…It was really not a pass in the grass it was a spin in the grass…. Bill had touched him and put him out but never checked…Dale was not quite “The Intimidator” yet…but he went in the grass and won…one of the reason’s we’re filling up the grandstands today…a moment in history. That day he showed them who was best."

"When GM Goodwrench came on…that was big. We loved Wrangler and they loved us…they fit with our crowd. They were an associate sponsor but when we did the Black and Silver car…and now we have car people sponsoring car people…it just clicked…we are legitimate now…I mean GM is global and we’re a bunch of “Southern Boys” from North Carolina…now it’s real. This race team is the best education we ever had…Dale and Richard…they was always teachin’ us something and you didn’t even know it…."

"We went to Dover and blew up an engine…broke a camshaft and we didn’t even know…we didn’t hear it, but he knew…he told us…he felt it.  Later they told the story that his daddy (Ralph Earnhardt) told him to wear thin soled shoes to feel the engine…but he could, he could feel the car…Those were the days you went with everything in the trailer…when you could change engines…and we took it and built it from scratch…we were all dirty and full of oil and dirt but we built it and ran it again.  We were going to have that car on the track whatever it took…we weren’t just dedicated…we never quit…it wound up blowin’ again ‘cos he ran it too hard…but that race probably helped up win the championship…we just never gave up…"
